The Maldives, located in Southern Asia, is the least populated and smallest nation, in terms of area, in Asia. The economy of the Maldives is growing and there are various sectors working towards its development and growth. Tourism stands as the largest industry. The 2nd largest industry is the fishing industry. Most of fish is exported as canned. Agriculture doesn't play a major role to support the economy due to the shortage of cultivable land. Some of the subsistence crops are coconut, banana, breadfruit, sweet potatoes, papayas, mangoes, taro, betel, chilies and onions. Main industries are fish processing, tourism, shipping, boat building, coconut processing, garments, woven mats, rope, handicrafts, coral and sand mining. |
